Dance Attire


Dance clothing can be purchased at discountdance.com or other dance websites as well as in a dance store. If you have any questions please contact us directly, we are happy to answer your questions.



Attire for ballet class



Required: Leotard, split sole  ballet shoes preferably canvas.  Hair must be in a bun, if you have short hair make sure it is out of your face.


Optional: tights, short tight fitting shorts, shrug or tight fitting long sleeve shirt, leg warmers that do not go above the knee,


NO skirts of any kind  


 

 

Attire for modern class


Required: leotard, hair must be up


Optional: tights, shorts, leg warmers that do not go above the knee, shrug or tight fitting long sleeve shirt

Attire for creative movement class


Comfortable clothing that the children can move it. Hair needs to be out of their eyes.


 NO jeans or jeggings


Sweatpants and a tee shirt are the best.


Required: socks preferably cotton or dance shoes




Attire for Choreography and Strength and Conditioning classes


Please wear comfortable clothing that you can move in. 


Suggested clothing: yoga pants, dance pants, sweatpants, shorts, leotard, tights, tank tops

Beginner Ballet ages 7-up

1 hour per week  $12/week


This beginner class is for people who are new to ballet. At SJO we teach mostly Cecchetti method along with influences of Veganova and Ecole Franaise methods. We will cover the basics of proper body positioning, strengthening and development of the body for ballet. We will learn the basic barre warm up and basic across the floor movements. We also will cover the language and terminology of ballet. We start every class with some yoga, pilates and a cardio exercise so that every dancer can build strength and flexibly more quickly. A good warm up before the barre makes it so the dancer can gain more from the barre exercises.



 

Intermediate Ballet  ages7-up

2 hours per week  $24/week


This class is for those that have already taken about a year or two of ballet. At SJO we teach mostly Cecchetti method along with influences of Veganova and Ecole Franaise methods. We will be working from fifth position and adding more complex barre warm ups and across the floor movements. More focus will be on adding movements to the reparatory. We start every class with some yoga, pilates and a cardio exercise so that every dancer can build strength and flexibly more quickly. A good warm up before the barre makes it so the dancer can gain more from the barre exercises.


Students should already have mastered body placement, turn out and basic movements.

 


 

Advanced Ballet ages 9-up

2 hours per week $24/week


This class is for people with at least 4 years of training. At SJO we teach mostly Cecchetti method along with influences of Veganova and Ecole Franaise methods.  We will focus on high level movement and dance ability. Student will have to be able to do a combination with only word prompts. This class will focus on quick and proper dance. We start every class with some yoga, pilates and a cardio exercise so that every dancer can build strength and flexibly more quickly. A good warm up before the barre makes it so the dancer can gain more from the barre exercises.


 Students should have good strength and flexibility. Student should have mastered all ballet movements. 

 

 

Beginner Modern ages7-up

1 hour per week $12/week


This class is for someone with no or very little modern dance training. We will work on the basics of Horton lines and concepts. We will work on Limon basics such as the lines, flow and concepts. We will be using many different warm ups and across-the-floor exercises from both techniques. We will focus on strengthening the body and learn the language of modern dance.  



 

 

Intermediate Modern ages 7-up

1 hour per week $12/week


In this class we will be working on the performance of Horton and Limon techniques. We will work on transitioning exercises into dances. We will delve into the concepts of fall and recovery, gravity and rotation. We will use metaphors and life experiences to create a dance. The student will learn harder balance and strength exercises.  


Students should know concepts of Horton and Limon and should have fairly good balance and strength.



 

                                                                                    

Advanced Modern ages 9-up

2 hours per week $24/ week


In this class students will receive the highest level of training. We will work on the most complex moves of balance and strength. We will explore in depth the concepts of fluidity, straight lines, fall and recovery, gravity and continuous movement.  We will also work on the performance aspects of Horton and Limon techniques.  


 Students should know all language and concepts of Horton and Limon. Student should have good flexibility and strength and be able to do movements with just word prompts


 

 

Creative Movement  ages 4-6

1 hour per week $12/week


This is a class for the young movers! We will explore basic movements such as walking, running, jumping and skipping with the use of fun games. This class is designed to get youngsters to move with ease and grace. This class also helps develop the balance and coordination of young children. This class helps develop the motor skills that are needed to build a strong foundation in dance or sports.



 

Choreography/ Guest class  ages 13-up

1 hour per week $12/week


In this class we will work through how to create a dance piece. We will go over what elements you need such as formations, lines, musicality and timing. We will also explain how to teach your chorography to others. A few times a year I will have guest teachers in to teach jazz, tap, hip-hop, break, African.


Students must have an intermediate level of dance training.


*this class is required for pre professional students.


 

Strength and Conditioning classages 9-up

1 hour per week $12/week


We will use weights and exercise bands to strengthen the feet, knees, hips, core, back and arms. In this class we will also work to increases stamina and flexibility. As part of the strength training we will do regular dance moves with the resistance of exercise bands to help sharpen the dance movements and strengthen the necessary muscles. We will be using methods that are used by physical therapists to strengthen the students’ bodies. We will also use the technique laid out in the book Conditioning for Dance by Eric Frankin.  We will include self massage so that the students can lean to relax certain muscles so the body can move easily. We will go through the concepts of how the muscles work and how to care for them.


 Students must have an intermediate level of training

Pre Professional Intermediate ages 13-18

8 hours per week  $96/week


This is a program for those dancers that want to have dance as a career in some way. This program is for someone that is passionate about dance and wants the very best training. The pre professional program includes ballet classes Monday/Wednesday, modern classes Tuesday/Thursday and includes the Choreography/ Guest class each Friday and the Strength and Conditioning class also on Friday. Some master classes in other dance styles will take place on Saturdays and are highly recommended. We are dedicated to pushing and inspiring our students so they can reach their fullest potential.


Students should know the concepts of Horton and Limon technique and have fairly good balance and strength. Students should also have the knowledge of the proper body placement for ballet, all basic ballet movements as well as good turnout and flexibility.    


 


 

Pre Professional Advanced ages 13-18

8 hours per week  $96/week


This is a program for those dancers that want to have dance as a career in some way. This program is for someone that is passionate about dance and wants the very best training. The pre professional program includes ballet classes Monday/Wednesday, modern classes Tuesday/Thursday and includes the Choreography/ Guest class each Friday and the Strength and Conditioning class also on Friday. Some master classes in other dance styles will take place on Saturdays and are highly recommended. We are dedicated to pushing and inspiring our students so they can reach their fullest potential.


Students should know all language and concepts of ballet and modern dance. The student should also have good flexibility and strength and be able to do any dance movement with only word prompts.




 

 Drop in Ballet ages 7-up

1 hour per week $12/week


Drop in and have some fun dancing with us. This class is for everyone from the new comer to ballet or for those that have danced many years and want to get back into ballet. We will be doing a ballet barre and some across the floor combinations. This class is a mixed age and level class, we always customize the lesson plan to fit your personal needs.
